I was challenged to design a book that highlights the anatomical characteristics of a typeface of my choice. I chose to focus on the typeface, Gotham, for its geometric structure and inherent functionality. Gotham is the perfect typeface to represent the urban, modern, and authoritative American identity.
To offset the masculine structure of the typeface, my color palette consists of pink, blue, and black. The project focused on balancing the function and aesthetics of the typeface, with each element designed to serve a clear purpose while reinforcing the visual identity. Attention was paid to the form of each letter to purposefully promote the key characteristics that give the typeface its voice. The stoplight icon is connected to the Gotham typeface, as both utilize clear, geometric shapes that are easy to understand. Gotham’s letters are built from circles and straight lines, similar to the round lights and rectangular frame of a stoplight. A clean, minimal layout was used to emphasize usability and reduce visual clutter, while the consistent use of color reinforced both structure and contrast.
The final design balances function and visual impact by using color, type, and layout to express the typeface’s identity and my personal narrative. The contrasting structure supports the design's authenticity without sacrificing charm, ensuring the design appeals to a wide audience.
